Behind the Muses

Cordoba's geography has always been an inspiration to painters, musicians and writers. Many of the homes of these artists may be visited in the different valleys around the Province. A different type of sightseeing to lift the spirit.

We all, on a large or small scale, are in search of beauty. Not ephemeral physical beauty, perfection the with time wears away and is lost, but inner beauty that transcends and permits us to go through life with a well fed soul.

Artist are familiar with this type of search. They pursue it, almost desperately, with each stroke of a brush on white canvas, when the first lines of a story are written, or with the first notes of a pentagram.

They know that it isn't and easy chore because beauty is elusive. That's why they look for the inspirational muses in the landscape.

This could be the explanation why many creators and artist explore Cordoba's geography, rich in landscapes that are close to paradise. Some find the muses between river rocks, in the green valleys or on the tops of the mountains. They fall in love, not just with the muses, but with the places. And they stay here so that each day they may breathe the air that carries the aroma of herbs and the moist earth.

This is what happened to Fernando Fader in the north, to Lino Eneas Spilimbergo, in the rolling hills of the Sierras Chicas; to Manuel de Falla, in historic Alta Gracia; to Manuel Mujica Lainez in the silence of the town of Los Cocos, and to other painters who took refuge under the sky of La Cumbre and San Esteban in the north of the Punilla Valley.

Lastly, on the other side of the Altas Cumbres, the magic of the landscape of Traslasierra has been successful in trapping hundreds of writers in the "Museo del Libro" (Book Museum) in the town of La Paz.

Visitors today can follow the roads that lead to the homes of these artists. Tours that feed the soul.

Yet another trip in search of beauty.

Music for Manuel

Neighbors in the town of Alta Gracia say that the minute Manuel del Falla set foot there he knew it was the place to live.

He must have heard music in the air, a sound very different from his native Spain, that at that time in 1942 was tormented by war.

The pain caused by being so far from home was alleviated by his compositions and his music that overflowed from the open windows of his chalet "Los Espinillos".

Fadar died in 1946, but his melodies can still be heard.

Sierras Chicas

Silimbergo in His Labyrinth

Big, bulging eyes, deep gazes, well defined faces and bodies, and strange mosaics distributed like a checker board are mixed with pure colors on the canvas of the "maestro" Lino Eneas Spilimbergo.

In collective memory of the inhabitants of Unquillo, at 26 kms for the city of Cordoba, the stories - between reality and fantasy- of the feverish days of this painter mixed with alcohol and romances of his models, live on.

What is true, however, is that his house is today a museum in which visitors discover aspects of an artists life, appreciate the works left behind, and visit the principle rooms of the house where works of local artists are exhibited.

Hours: till 30 of April from Wednesday to Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Thursday and Friday from 10:00 am to 12:00 p.m.

Small entrance fee.
